In its regular session on October 4, City Council approved the site plan and design elements for the International Dark Sky Discovery Center (IDSDC) planned for Fountain Hills.

IDSDC President Joe Bill said he was pleased they had brought the project to this stage. He provided background information, saying the first step was to get the city’s cooperation with an update to lighting regulations in the zoning ordinance to maintain dark skies over Fountain Hills. Upon completion in November 2016, they received approval to seek designation as an international dark sky community through the International Dark Sky Association. This designation, making Fountain Hills the 17th community in the world with such a designation, became official in January 2018.
